Why founders are quietly ditching agencies for one hybrid hire
The agency model is under real pressure right now, and it is not only about price. Fractional and solo specialists are winning work that used to go to agencies almost by default, and the founders making that switch keep describing the same reason: coordination was quietly costing them more than the invoice ever did.
Hire an agency, or hire a developer, a marketer, and a strategist separately, and you inherit a translation problem. The developer needs to understand what the growth plan actually requires. The marketer needs to understand what is technically realistic to ship in the timeline they are promising. Someone has to sit in the middle of that and keep everyone aligned, and more often than not, that someone ends up being the founder, in meetings that exist purely to get three specialists to agree on the same plan.
The hidden cost of splitting the work
I have sat on both sides of this. As a specialist hired alongside two others, the actual work was rarely the bottleneck, the handoffs were. A decision made in the marketing meeting would not reach the technical build for another week. A technical constraint discovered mid-sprint would not reach the go-to-market plan until it had already been promised to a client. None of that shows up on an invoice, but it shows up in the timeline, every time.
Why one hybrid person changes the math
When the same person is making the technical decision and the growth decision, that translation step disappears entirely. A pricing page does not just get built to spec, it gets built with conversion in mind from the first sketch, because the person writing the code is the same person who will be measuring whether it converts. A go-to-market plan does not get written in isolation from what is technically realistic to ship in the timeline, because it is the same person planning both.
This is not a pitch that one person can do everything an agency roster can. It is a bet that for most early-stage founders and small teams, the coordination overhead of three specialists costs more time than the specialization gains you back, and that a single hybrid hire who can move fluidly across building and growing a product will get you to a working result faster.
